Advances in computing systems are rapidly transforming health care, want to learn more?
There are important ethical considerations related to the design of these systems and how they are used by consumers and in clinical settings.
The new Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science houses the Research Center for Optimal Digital Ethics Health. At ReCODE Health, Dr. Camille Nebeker, investigators, and team look to shape responsible and ethical research practices in the emerging field of digital health. We conduct, support, and disseminate empirical research to inform ethical digital health research practices. We strive to promote awareness of ethical principles and practices. ReCODE Health houses more than 10 active multidisciplinary projects from various research-funding sources.
The Ethical and Responsible Research in the Design of Sociotechnical Systems (ER2) project explores the current ethical practices in digital health research. Digital health includes wearable fitness sensors, smart home devices, and condition monitoring applications. These technologies passively gather granular human data from research participants and introduce new ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI), including privacy concerns, data management, and informed consent. Through this research, our team will identify the ethical challenges researchers encounter.
